How Connecting with Your Emotions Fuels Lasting Self-Discipline
You were gravely mistaken if you thought discipline was doing with zero emotion.
Have you been lead to believe that the pursuit of self-discipline requires behaving in a series of actions that is completely absent of emotion?
A task you deemed impossible as it is not apart of your identity.
I did so too at one point in my life.
Something changed and when it did…
It was a defining moment that completely revolutionized my life experience.
Let me explain:
Social conditioning on top of people’s misunderstanding of the word “discipline” has caused many false convictions that the only way an individual can have self-discipline is to become emotionless while acting like a robot.
Extremely distant from the human experience meant to be had in life.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Emotions, when understood and harnessed, serve as the driving force behind true and lasting discipline.
It becomes the jet fuel that will get you out to orbit, towards creating a life of your very own design to accomplish anything you want to achieve.
By connecting deeply within our emotional landscape, we get access to a hidden power, unlocking a new Way of approaching life’s challenges and obstacles.
I want you to take a moment to yourself, right now, pause to set an intention.
Let’s reinterpret your past connotations with the word “self-discipline” so that you can finally access a trait that the most successful individuals in history possess.
Self-discipline was a key contributing factor that helped them beat the odds to come out on top.
Now is the time to reengineer the role of emotions in self-discipline and discover how they can fuel your journey towards lasting success in life.
THE ORIGINS OF EMOTIONS
Human beings are emotional by nature.
Emotions were mother nature’s way of assisting your ancestors to survive within extremely harsh living conditions.
Reminders = Emotions
Encountering a loss left an imprint in our psyche via memory which lead to a series of emotions to remind us what not to do in order to survive.
The living conditions were so harsh back then that thinking was too slow and methodical so evolution gave us the gift of intuition and emotion to quickly act fast before tragic death.
It’s one of the reason why going through a break up becomes so painful as your mind is interpreting the emotional pain as physical [the experienced pain during a break up is equivalent to breaking the bone in your femur which requires 900 pounds of force]
Pain is a reminder to not engage in a particular behavior again.
Some respond to pain by shying away to remain complacent while others leverage the pain to transcend to new heights.
Our true character gets revealed in response to pain, but how we respond based on action either builds character or destroys it.
How to interpret pain becomes a completely different story which I’ll save for another time as I do not want to get sidetracked from the main point.

Logic and emotion become the perfect dance partners to compliment our life experiences.
Emotions are nature's way of providing clues for the rational mind, enabling us to make logical decisions based on our accumulated experiences in an instant.
To completely disregard [or worse yet repress] our emotions would take away from the incredible experience life has to offer.
By tapping into our emotions it allows us to navigate our complex Self to discover parts of ourselves we would never discover if we were limited to the rational mind and logic.

In fact, scientist have discovered humans cannot make a decision unless emotion is present.
“the University of Iowa conducted research on patients with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, a brain region associated with emotion processing. These patients exhibited impaired decision-making abilities despite having intact cognitive abilities, suggesting that emotions are essential for making rational decisions”
In my humble opinion: we have reach a stage where the vast major of society today allows too much emotions to the point it overrides logic and reasoning.
The evidence?
Logic and reason disrupts emotions [which have been severely disconnected from objective reality] so these individuals will fight back seeking every proof of subjective evidence to maintain these emotions to the point of delusion.
Logic does not cater to emotions as logic indicates what is as it completely disregards the emotions that are present.
For those that struggle with doing specific set of actions [while their emotions indicate the opposite] I share with you a way to leverage any life situation to best benefit you.
You can consider this as a practical way to practice a mental jiu-jitsu towards live beyond the mats.
SELF-DISCIPLINE: WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL EMOTION
Do not beat yourself up if you do not immediately grasp this concept:
When you understand that your short term emotions should never be allowed to further delay the long term emotions [as in you should be experiencing your most desired life outcomes now] is the moment you will realize self-discipline has been an emotion all this time.
Read that again.
Short term emotions is a form of procrastination which results in the delayed long term emotions you could be experiencing.
Skeptically allow this idea to be planted in your mind [allow daily reflection of past experiences and gain more life experience through this lens to nurture this idea] as time passes: it will hit you like a ton of bricks whenever you are ready.
Important: you must enjoy the entire process towards the end destination of your most desired life outcomes. Never jump to the popular belief that only once you achieve XYZ will you be happy.
By staying the path you will eventually accomplish this vision as long as you do not actually stop and give up. You can read more on this subject here: https://www.philosophyofjiu-jitsu.com/p/rediscovering-flow-state-within-jiujitsu-beyond-mats
When you internalize the abstract concept you never have to wait around for the feeling of “motivation” to spike you into action ever again…
You do what is required as it’s simply apart of your Being.
Because there is nothing better to do of than [insert process to achieve desired life experiences here].
With this adopted perspective:
By allowing short term emotions stop you, from taking proactive steps every day, it is clear your most desired life outcomes becomes the ultimate sacrifice.
In the moment as days pass it goes unnoticed but eventually you will look back on the distance past and notice this regret - wishing you saw it differently back then.
As you probably realized by now, infrastructure built today have been designed to control short term emotions so naturally it overrides long term emotions.
Remember you are biologically wired to make decisions based off seeking pleasure and avoiding pain as these two factors resulted in survival.
Those that remain in this unconscious zombie like haze truly believe their current reality is a predetermine fate and there is absolutely nothing they can do about it.
Pretty easy to accept this when there are hedonistic traps strategically placed both in the physical and digital worlds appealing to our instant gratification needs.
Some are aware of all this, but they too are still facing a petrifying fear:
To face a potential reality of attempting to go after their most desired life experiences, yet end up failing, only for them to return back to their “predetermine fate” but no longer having this possible day dream to get them through their normal days…
Absolute tragic reality to face if one ever gives up.
Through a delusional blind faith - there are those tapping into a specific reality - the decision to give up does not exist nor will it ever become a possibility.
These individuals have gone through very specific life experiences that made it crystal clear what their existence was not meant for.
It’s a feeling that absolutely eats you alive on the inside.
Not reaching your true potential.
This tiny segment of the population truly leverage their bad experiences to help them identify what they absolutely do want their life to look like [after having gone through life experiences they no longer will tolerate] and the possible future trajectories if changes have not been implemented.
You must identify exactly what you do not want to discover exactly what it is you do want.
It’s the best tool everybody has access to even if one has not yet gained enough life experience by successfully breaking free from the chains society has created.
Your mind wants to see proof, not be told false promises.
When you identify these most desired life experiences you harness these very emotions.
I would highly recommend you set a timer for at least twenty minutes to access your imagination to play out different realities to bask in these emotions to further hammer in this idea.
When you are first getting started:
Allow these emotions to boil whenever you are in the presence of short term emotions that attempt to derail your progress towards the Ideal Self that is currently living out your most desired life experiences.
For what purpose?
Because you will no longer tolerant an existence absent of life experiences you know you should be experiencing now.
When it is not even an after thought is when you know you’ve mastered self-discipline.
Next time you allow detrimental short term emotions to hijack your long term emotions - know that you are the only one that is causing further delay of experiencing your Ideal Self’s reality.
Time is ticking wether you like it or not so might as well do something instead of doing nothing.
ESSENTIALS DURING THIS TRANSITION
Why is self-discipline an absolute must have in modern times?
Self-discipline means you have the power to manage yourself:
By proactively interpreting objective reality through a subjective lens - considering both past experiences and present circumstances - you can shape the future you desire.
This process involves relying on objective evidence while navigating an ever-changing and unpredictable environment.
By balancing objective proof with your personal insights and desired outcomes, you can create a path toward the future you want to experience, even amidst uncertainty.
With everything going on now…
Today may very well be the most important time in history to have self-discipline.
Look at all the signs around you… we are in a middle of a transition.
Civilization is at point where we are exiting old times and entering a completely new landscape.
Nobody alive is able to pinpoint exactly how the future will look.
By allowing short term emotions dictate day to day life [and doing absolutely nothing proactive while foolishly believing every thing will be okay] is asking for trouble.
In history’s most uncertain times the only certainty you can possess is your self-discipline.
One of the critical steps in life and in your personal development is mastering your emotions.
Possessing the emotional maturity to remain rational and make informed decisions in the presence of your emotions [while others natural knee jerk reaction is to elicit chaos for a temporary release causing a domino effect that influences society’s behavior as a whole i.e. 2020 being the extreme case].
The emotional maturity that comes with self-discipline leads you to the destination of self-mastery to establish order within chaos.
Absolutely essential if you want to have a fighting chance of determining how your life will play out.
Despite distracting emotions present you tap into logic to access the power of the rational mind:
Do not allow your emotions to create a mirage that would sway you from making an informed decision to act.
These small victories compile over a period of time that provide you tangible evidence of who you are becoming while building up your intuition in the process.
You are able to make decisions based on your gut instincts during times that require an immediate answer.
Next thing you know…
It was the right answer because you made it right.
If not?
You made the best decision based on your existing knowledge base. The failure only provides you objective feedback [it does not represent your identity and sense of Self as it was only an expression] on how exactly you can improve next time to make a better informed decision.
This is the Way of connecting your emotions to develop your self-discipline so you can achieve your most desire life experiences.
See you on the mats,
