How To Apply "Mental Jiu-jitsu" To Life Beyond The Mats

This can be applied even if you don't train marital arts.

Imagine possessing a tool so powerful it could transform every challenge into a life changing opportunity.

A mindset so effective it could turn your greatest weaknesses into your most formidable strengths. A philosophy that doesn't just change how you face adversity, but revolutionizes your approach to every single area of life. This isn't just about physical prowess or mental fortitude – it's about harmonizing both into a seamless strategy for success.

The secret?

Mental Jiu-jitsu.

A tool that turns disadvantages to advantages, by not only using your opponent's strength against them, but how you live day to day life while pursuing your most desired life outcomes. It's the art of transforming perceived negatives into powerful positives. The ability to see opportunity where others see obstacle and navigate life's complexities with the grace and efficiency of a martial artist against an inferior opponent.

Are you ready to master the mental art of conquering life's challenges?

WHAT IS JIU-JITSU

At its core, jiu-jitsu is a martial art that emphasizes technique over brute force.

Originating in Japan, refined in Brazil then has grown to United States and all corners of the globe, it's often called "the gentle art."

But don't let the name fool you...

Jiu-jitsu is a chess match played with the human body [between two individuals on a one on one situation].

It's about leverage, timing, and strategy through technique application.

On the mats, a skilled practitioner can overcome larger, stronger and heavier opponents. They turn defensive positions into offensive opportunities. They use an attacker's aggression, strength, lack of knowledge and momentum against them.

But here's where it gets interesting:

These principles extend far beyond the jiu-jitsu academy.

Mental Jiu-jitsu takes the core tenets of this physical practice and applies them to life's daily struggles beyond the mats.

Faced with a problem at work? Use leverage.
Dealing with a personal setback? Change your position.
Confronted by a seemingly insurmountable challenge? Redirect its energy.

The true power of jiu-jitsu lies not in its physical techniques, but in the mindset it cultivates.

A mindset that sees every obstacle as an opportunity for growth.
A mindset that transforms perceived weaknesses into unique strengths.
A mindset that allows you to remain calm and strategic, even when life has you pinned down.

Are you starting to see how this could revolutionize your approach to life's challenges?

Even if you have no interest in training the art physically - you can apply mental jiu-jitsu to achieve your most desired life experiences.

More on this later in today’s entry.

NEGATIVE IS POSITIVE

Life deals you cards, and there's no changing the hand you're given. Resist this fact all you want, it remains immutable.

But here's the secret:

You can change your interpretation, your perspective, and your response. You can strategize how to use these cards to your benefit.

This is the essence of mental jiu-jitsu's power.

Too many people today:

  • Complain about what they cannot control

  • Resist unchangeable circumstances

  • Become addicted to short-term emotions at the detriment of long-term outcomes

  • Continuously developing a victim mindset with conviction

As the years go by this parasite mentality grows into a distorted reality that only reinforces itself to one’s own self-demise.

But what if you could flip the script?

When you focus on what you can control within the space of the uncontrollable, you seize the reins of your reality.

Consider this:
Life presents both negatives and positives.
Most see positives as positives.
But few recognize the hidden positives within negatives.

This is where the trained eye of mental jiu-jitsu comes into play.

At its core, jiu-jitsu philosophy leverages the unfavorable to create desirable outcomes. It's not about denying negativity, but about transforming it.

Not turning a blind eye to objective facts [so the individual can backward rationalize to the point of delusion in order to protect one’s short term emotions from objective reality…].

Can you see how this one shift in perspective could revolutionize your approach to challenges?

JIU-JITSU BEYOND THE MATS

Less than one point away from not being able to graduate high school. Further reenforcing why I found it impossible to become educated.

A victim of emotional and physical bullying to the point of low self-esteem. Socially awkward to the point of being considered autistic.

Feeling completely trapped in a system that was set up for me to fail.
Can you imagine the amount of internal resist felt desiring to travel the world indefinitely?

Those were only a handful of negative factors [that could have stopped me from living a life beyond my wildest imagination] if I did not leverage mental jiu-jitsu into my life.

I leveraged the fact I severely struggled with learning at an early age to become an avid reader that completely absorbs himself in reading material to understand the depth of understanding.

The constant feeling of social anxiety lead me to proactively develop communication skills from below zero to the point where I have the self-confidence I always wanted.

And the once deemed “unrealistic” dream of living around the world has become such a norm to the point I feel more comfortable in foreign countries than my own hometown.

This isn't just my story. It's a blueprint for leveraging mental jiu-jitsu in your own life… and this happened at a time where I had zero martial arts experience. It was only after I started training was when I realized that everything I learned off the mats could in fact be applied on the mats.

The deeper question you must explore is:

If you know you could turn a negative into a positive - why would you?

By simply leveraging your strong emotion response [to the unfavorable cards you have been dealt with] you’ll propel yourself in ways that completely surpass those who were born gifted talents [and you will not fall into the trap of laziness that very often comes with the talented individuals].

You see.

The biggest obstacles you face now are nothing but stepping stones to reach your highest potential.

By simply leveraging your strong emotion response [to the unfavorable cards you have been dealt with] you’ll propel yourself in ways that completely surpass those who were born gifted talents [and you will not fall into the trap of laziness that very often comes with the talented individuals].

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

A very personal story is the best way to conclude today's entry.

At a time where I was extremely lost in life I was romantically involved with someone from one of the Scandinavian countries.

We met in Bali, Indonesia at the beach bar one evening.

I introduced myself to her as I was captivated by her beauty.

The evening was a great time for the both of us.

However, the following day, she had to return to her home country as I continue my stay on a paradise island.

Before parting ways I quickly grabbed her contact details so we can stay in touch.

As you can imagine it was strong mixed emotions knowing there was a possibility we would never see each other again.

Over the following weeks, we stayed in contact and continued getting to know each other, as it was exciting to know that feelings were mutual and we both want to explore the possibility of us further.

Due to distance things got complicated as the months went by…

Long story, short.

I was celebrating my birthday with my closest friends that had flown into so we can live in a Spanish castle together for a week.

As much as an incredible time I was having:

I was missing her as she was suppose to be there.

Unfortunately, I got a message from her on the day of my birthday to inform me that she couldn’t go further.

I remember feeling as if I got hit by a shotgun.

It was hard to breath.

The following days to weeks involved me processing my unique strong emotions as to what had happened.

During the emotional hurricane there was a moment where I asked myself:

“Alright, this is the worst emotional pain you ever felt in your life - what can you do so that one day in the future you can say this experience was the best that ever happened to your life?”

One thing about achieving success in many areas of your life - it becomes harder to find an area of weakness in your values.

I pondered on this question until an answer popped into my head…

Jiu-jitsu

From that moment on I started training jiu-jitsu in Kyiv, Ukraine during the break up so I stop feeling drained by the whole situation.

It’s been years since I’ve accepted that call to adventure:

Jiu-jitsu has completely transformed my life in ways that I can proudly say that unfortunate break up was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Not only has the martial art provided me with an invaluable skillset, but it has radically transformed my body in ways that lifting weights has never done before.

Let’s not forget how training jiu-jitsu has enriched my travel experiences with so much depth that surpass the casual ‘meeting the locals’ side of travel.

And the benefits continue to stack value into my life and others from that one “negative” experience.

You see.

Mental jiu-jitsu starts by asking yourself the right questions to the unfavorable circumstances life throws at you.

The right answers come short after you ask the right questions.

From there all you need is the right guidance from an authority figure and relentless execution with self-discipline.

See ya on the mats,
